Retirement: Team India’s Gabbar had to retire from all forms of cricket: India’s star batsman Shikhar Dhawan, known as Gabbar, has said goodbye to his entire cricket career. India’s legendary batsman Shikhar Dhawan has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Saturday, 24 August.
The left-handed batsman spoke his heart out through a video on social media. 38-year-old Dhawan had an international career spanning over 12 years, in which he played 34 Tests, 167 ODIs and 68 T20 matches and scored 10,867 runs.
Dhawan posted a video on his Instagram account and said:
"I am standing at that point of my life from where I can only look back at old memories. My dream was always to play for India and it has come true, for this I am grateful to many people. My family, my coaches Tarak Sinha and Madan Sharma, under whom I learned to play cricket. Also my team, with whom I played for years. In them I found another family. I got fame and wealth and everyone's love.
“But it’s important to turn the page to move forward in life and that’s why I am announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket.

"And now that I'm concluding my cricket journey, there's peace in my heart, that I played a lot for my country. I'm grateful to all my fans for all the love. I've told myself don't feel sad that you won't play for India anymore, but feel happy that you played for the country."
Shikhar Dhawan made his international debut in 2004, in the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, where he scored over 500 runs, including three centuries. Six years later, he debuted for India in an ODI against Australia in Visakhapatnam in 2010.
He made his test debut in March 2013, which was an unforgettable occasion as he scored the fastest test century in just 85 balls in his debut match.
Dhawan was known as a specialist in ODIs. He performed brilliantly in the 2013 Champions Trophy, helping India win the title and becoming the highest run-scorer of the tournament by scoring 363 runs at an average of 90.75. He also performed brilliantly in other tournaments like Asia Cup 2014, Cricket World Cup 2015, Champions Trophy 2017 and Asia Cup 2018.

With his tenth ODI century, Shikhar Dhawan joins an exclusive group of just eight players in men’s ODI history to have scored more than 5000 runs with a strike rate of more than 90 and an average of more than 40. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are the other two Indian batters on this list.
Dhawan last played an international match in 2022 in an ODI against Bangladesh in Chittagong. His last competitive match was in this year’s IPL, when he captained the Punjab Kings in April 2024.
