ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: India will be hoping to respond quickly after suffering a heavy defeat to New Zealand in their opening match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 on Friday.
The 58-run loss to the third-placed team in Group A has put India in a difficult position on the points table, with defending champions Australia the favourites to top the group. The two results so far in this group have challenged the form book, making the situation even more interesting.
And batsman Jemimah Rodrigues knows the team has to get over this disappointment quickly.
“To move forward, I think we have to adopt the right approach because the tournament is not over yet,” Rodrigues said in India’s post-match press conference.
“We have to take some positives from this game and learn a lot from it.”
New Zealand’s openers put up quick runs early in the match, putting India under early pressure, but Rodrigues says the Kiwis’ run rate was no surprise.
“We knew any team would be aggressive against us, and I think they played with a lot of intent. We created chances, but unfortunately we couldn’t take them.” India’s number four batsman focused on her role in the team’s batting display that fell short of expectations.
Rodrigues was dismissed for 13, nicking a simple catch at mid-on, and the 24-year-old was angry with herself that she didn’t shoulder the responsibility of building a strong partnership after the team collapsed to 42/3.
“I know I am ready to bat anywhere for the team. Today, because I was batting well and I had shown some form in the warm-up games, it was my responsibility to build a partnership after we lost wickets.” “Today’s game will be one we would like to forget.
This is a World Cup and we have to keep moving forward and pick ourselves up – we can’t get hung up on this game. We have to pick ourselves up and show the character of this team.”
Next up India will be against neighbours Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday – a match that now assumes even more significance, as the 2020 finalists need a win to steady their campaign. But Pakistan will not be easy opponents, as their opening day performance saw them stun Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka.
