Kolkata Knight Riders, the defending champions under their new coach Dwayne Bravo and their new skipper, Ajinkya Rahane, went on to lose their season opener against RCB in their home ground at the Eden Gardens. Later, they registered their first win against Royals in the Guwahati Stadium. However, playing at the Wankhede, the KKR batters toppled like sliding cheese and faced a humiliating loss that marked a major dip in their net run-rate.
Sunrisers Hyderabad were the other finalists from the previous season of the IPL, known widely for their explosive batting. Kolkata Knight Riders again did not have a very good start to their innings, as Sunil Narine and Quinton de Kock, the two openers, again fell early in the powerplay as skipper Pat Cummins shared the new ball alongside Mohammed Shami, picking a wicket each. However, the KKR skipper came in and gave it back to the SRH bowlers paired alongside young and inform Angkrish Raghuvanshi.
They built on a firm partnership until being dismissed in repetitive overs to Zeeshan Ansari and Kamindu Mendis; Venkatesh Iyer, KKR’s most expensive player of the season, bought for a whopping INR 23.75 crores, excelled under these conditions and batted stunningly for his 60 runs off just 29 balls, as he smashed the likes of Cummins and Harshal Patel to all parts of the ground.
Rinku Singh, the pocket dynamo for KKR, also seemed to be showing some fireworks today at the Eden Gardens, as he smashed some stunning fours to score a quickfire 32* off just 17 balls. Andre Russell, despite his two balls, could not do anything special as KKR put on a firm 200 in their 20 overs.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad brought in their impact player, Travis Head, to open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma, arguably the most explosive and feared opening partnership of IPL 2025. However, Head failed for the second consecutive time after the match against Capitals, this time with further bad results as the batter was dismissed for just 4 runs on 2 balls.
Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan fell in consecutive overs to the KKR’s new ball bowlers, Harshit Rana and Vaibhav Arora. Kamindu Mendis and Nitish Reddy went after scoring some runs, which could not bring much hope to the SRH innings. Young star Aniket Verma also fell short in his attempt to clear the deep mid-wicket boundary and was caught off Chakravarthy by Venky Iyer.
Heinrich Klaasen looked like the only hurdle between KKR and winning the match, while KKR’s impact player, Vaibhav Arora, returned with a stunning final over of his spell, dismissing the dangerous batter. Chakravarthy’s hat-trick chance won it for KKR as he dismissed both Cummins and Simrajeet on successive deliveries. KKR wins the match by a huge margin of 80 runs.
