Digvesh Rathi Fined for 'notebook celebration'

The internet was taken by storm by LSG bowler Digvesh Rathi fined for a notebook send-off in the LSG vs PBKS match. This gesture to Priyansh Arya after dismissing the batter in the powerplay has been deemed unnecessary and against the spirit of the game.

The LSG vs PBKS match marked one-sided domination from this year’s most comprehensive-looking side, the Punjab Kings. The Kings already showed their batting caliber in the first game, while this time around their bowlers too did a fairly good job of restricting the big-hitting LSG batters to low scores on their home ground.

The match, despite being one-sided the thrill and the action were double-ended as some efforts and action from LSG players took the attention of the LSG bowlers.

The new Delhi-born LSG star, Digvesh Rathi has been their second most successful bowler after Shardul Thakur, while he recreated the infamous notebook sendoff of former West Indies pacer Kesrick Williams after dismissing PBKS opener Priyansh Arya.

The left-handed batter was dropped three balls earlier at slip which went to the boundary, while Rathi backed with his wicket when Arya top-edged a short delivery to Shardul Thakur. Rathi then went on to pick another wicket in the form of Prabhsimran Singh in the 11th over of the game.

The catch for dismissing Prabhsimran was an exquisite effort made by the two youngsters, Ravi Bishnoi and Ayush Badoni who pushed back a stellar from the boundary ropes which was completed by Bishnoi with great reflexes.

Rathi was imposed with a strict punishment after the game for his unnecessary on-field misconduct and was fined 25% of his match fees alongside being handed one demerit point.

Digvesh Rathi fined: Former Indian legend slammed Digvesh Rathi for his celebration

Digvesh Rathi copies Kesrick Williams celebration

Known for his remarks on Indian players and cricket, Sunil Gavaskar was again on air when Digvesh Rathi bowled his first over in the game and dismissed the Punjab Kings opener, Priyansh Arya.

Gavaskar claimed that the way the bowler ran immediately to the departing batter and made an unnecessary gesture with his ‘notebook celebration’, proved that the bowler was not expecting a wicket.

Unimpressed Gavaskar claimed that such a six is considered cool if the bowler makes a comeback with multiple hits around the park by the batter. He also stated that bowling 5 deliveries dot and then a wicket is not something one celebrates in this fashion.

During this comment in the commentary box, Gavaskar’s fellow commentator reminded him of Kesrick Williams doing a similar celebration against Indian legend Virat Kohli who later responded with repetitive boundaries against the same bowler.
