IPL 2023: MI SWOT Analysis: Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats

Source: Quint

MI are probably the best side in IPL history, as the stats claim they are the most successful team with five title wins. The Men in Blue have appeared in eight finals out of their 15 IPL appearances, and after last year’s disappointment, they will be looking to make a comeback in this edition of the IPL.

STRENGTHS

The Mumbai Indians have two experienced batters in Ishan Kishan, who recently hit a double century in Odisha, and Suryakumar Yadav, who is currently the world’s top T20I batsman. SKY has proven his batting skills not only through his outflow of runs but also through his unique 360-degree cricket shots. The Indians will be hoping for him to score in the IPL 2023

Mumbai’s batting is further strengthened by their power hitters, who can change the course of the game with only a few balls to spare.

The team shows its stability by having world-class pacers alongside its quality batsmen. Archer and Bumrah can prove to be the most convincing bowling pair for MI since the Boult-Bumrah duo.

WEAKNESS

Though the MI squad looks to be the most promising side of this year’s IPL, there are no such notable weaknesses. However, MI lacks proper spinning options on the side, with only Samsul Mulani making his IPL debut and Piyush Chawla making a comeback, both of whom are not very good spinners. Other spinning options include Hrithik Shokeen and Kumar Karthikeya, who are young and inexperienced and not reliable players on such a big platform.

They even lack a proper Indian-pace bowling option, as MI has no Indian pacers to replace Archer or Richardson from their starting lineup, and bowling substitutes mostly include players like Jason Behrendoff and only one possible Indian domestic player in Vishnu Vinod.

OPPORTUNITIES

Mumbai Indians, with one of the best teams in this year’s IPL, would look to mark a strong and formidable comeback after their most disappointing season last year. The Indians ended in the last position in last year’s league table and would look to register a title win this season.

Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav will look to capitalize on all their opportunities in this year’s IPL as they are looking to seal their spots in India’s World Cup squad in the absence of players like Rishan Pant.

This year’s IPL would also mark the return of England’s Jofra Archer and India’s Jasprit Bumrah, who had recently parted ways with their national teams due to injuries.

THREATS

The MI squad is too good, and not only their starting 11 but also their bench seems to be utterly convincing. With so many good bunches of players already in the playing 11 and only four possible overseas players in the side, there is no place left for players like Dewald Brevis or Tristian Stubbs or the newly traded Australian bowler Jason Behrendoff.
