Big Decision Before India vs South Africa Test Series: The two-match Test series between India and South Africa is set to begin on Friday in Kolkata, but just before the first game, the Indian team management has made a major decision.
Promising young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has been released from the Test squad for strategic reasons, as the team looks to find the best combination suited for the Kolkata pitch and playing conditions.
Coach’s Statement: “Strategy Comes Before Development”
India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate hinted during the pre-match press conference that Nitish would not be part of the playing XI for the first Test.
“Nitish is part of our future plans, but strategy comes first. Considering the importance of this series and the conditions in Kolkata, we felt the need for an extra batter. Therefore, Nitish will not feature in this Test.”
He also revealed that the management is considering Dhruv Jurel, who has been in excellent domestic form, as part of the playing combination.
BCCI’s Official Statement—Nitish to Join India ‘A’ Squad
According to the BCCI’s press release, Nitish has been temporarily released from the Test squad to get more game time.
He will now join the India ‘A’ team for the three-match One-Day series against South Africa ‘A’, scheduled from November 13 to 19 at Rajkot’s Niranjan Shah Stadium.
After the series, Nitish will rejoin the senior Test squad for the second Test in Guwahati (starting November 22).
Nitish’s Recent Test Performances
Nitish made his Test debut last month against the West Indies in the home series.
- In the Ahmedabad Test, he bowled 4 overs but failed to pick up a wicket.
- He did not get a chance to bat in that match.
- In the Delhi Test, he was promoted to No. 5 and scored 43 runs but didn’t get an opportunity to bowl.
Despite decent signs of potential, it seems the management wants to prioritize experience and team balance for this series.
Gautam Gambhir Backs Nitish: “He Needs to Be Supported”
Team mentor Gautam Gambhir had earlier defended Nitish’s selection and emphasized the importance of backing young players.
“You can’t pick young players only for tough overseas tours. They must also be given opportunities at home to learn and grow. Sharing the dressing room with seniors like Bumrah and Siraj itself is a great learning experience.”
Team Strategy and Focus
This series holds massive importance for India as they face the reigning World Test Champions, South Africa.
- The Kolkata pitch traditionally offers good assistance to fast bowlers.
- India is likely to go with an extra batter and an additional pace option.
- With Nitish out, Dhruv Jurel’s inclusion in the playing XI looks highly probable.
Next Step for Nitish Kumar Reddy
Nitish will now focus on the India ‘A’ series in Rajkot before rejoining the senior squad for the Guwahati Test.
This move will help him gain match fitness, confidence, and valuable exposure before returning to the Test setup.
