2025 ICC Champions Trophy Semi-final scenario: India’s record in the knockouts of ICC tournaments
India's record in ICC Knockouts

The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy is currently witnessing its final group-stage game, and hence the four qualified teams are just one step away from the knockout games. With the Group B games over and Group A’s two semi-finalists qualified as well, India, New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa are the 4 semi-finalists in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

The India vs. New Zealand match might decide the fate of the two teams in the semis as to who would appear against in the semis from the teams qualified from Group B.

But with the four teams who qualified for the semi-finals of the Cricket World Cup in 2023 in India as well, here is the Indian team’s record in ICC knockout matches over the history of limited-overs cricket tournaments.

India has had the most moderate records in the history of the ICC records, from major and dramatic wins to emotional title wins after huge gaps; Indian stars, from time to time, have seen it all. With both wins and losses, India has been the most sensational team in the history of ICC events across several limited-overs formats.

In T20 World Cups:

India has played in 8 knockout games in the history of the shortest format of the game in the ICC T20 World Cup. Ever since the first time in the inaugural season of the World T20 Cup, India played their first semi-final against the mighty Aussies, followed by a win over arch-rivals Pakistan in the finals to lift the first-ever World T20 title.

After 7 years, another semi-final appearance against South Africa, which they won, and then lost the final to Sri Lanka in 2014. Dating back to 2016, India lost their first-ever T20 World Cup semi-final to West Indies, the champions of the edition.

The 2022 T20 World Cup marked India’s return after their humiliating exit after a group-stage loss to Pakistan in the 2021 T20 World Cup. However, England defeated India in another semi-final clash by a huge 10 runs.

Then followed the 2024 World Cup, which marked India’s dramatic win over England in the semis and was followed by a title win against South Africa when India pulled an almost-lost match from the clutches of their opposition.

In the ICC ODI World Cups:

India had to make their way from being underdogs to the greats of the format in the history of the World Cup. From being considered nothing to defeating the mighty West Indies in the 1983 ODI World Cup to being the modern-day greats maintaining a 10-match victory streak in the World Cup edition, India has come a long way up.

India played their first knockout in the ODI World Cup back in 1983 and won both the semi-final and final games. Following this, they lost the ODI World Cup semi-final in 1987 to the great English side.

After winning the quarter-final in the 1996 World Cup, they eventually lost the semi-final and were knocked out by Sri Lanka. After a humiliating World Cup campaign in 99, India followed with a stunning response in 2003, maintaining an all-win record until the finals. There they lost in the finals after a comforting win over Kenya in the semis.

India won the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals as well in the 2011 ODI World Cup, while the defending champions failed to defend their title in the 2015 World Cup semi-final against the Aussies.

India once again crashed out of a promising World Cup campaign in 2019, when they lost to New Zealand in a rain-affected match at Old Trafford. Also in 2023, 20 years after the 2003 World Cup, India once again maintained an all-win record of 10 matches in the World Cup before losing to Aussie in the final on another occasion.

India probably has the finest record among full-member nations going into the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

The first-ever edition was in 1998 when it was named the ICC Knockout Trophy, as India lost to West Indies in the semi-finals after winning the quarter-finals against the mighty Aussies.

Again in the next edition, India first won the pre-quarterfinal and then followed with another victory over Australia in the quarter-finals. India continued with their form, thus winning the semis against South Africa but losing the title match to New Zealand.

India won the 2002 semi-finals in the Champions Trophy with the first victory over South Africa and then shared the trophy with Sri Lanka in the finals since both the main day and reserve day were washed out by rain.

India emerged with an easy win in the semi-finals of the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy against Sri Lanka before winning it against hosts England in the finals at Edgbaston.

India went on to defeat Bangladesh in their first-ever semi-final appearance at the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, before they lost to Pakistan in the finals, a rare event in ICC events for India.

India will play their 12th knockout game in the history of the tournament marking their appearance in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy semi-finals.
