IND vs AUS: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the two batting stalwarts for India, have been facing constant criticism from the fans for their underperformance during the recent home Test series against New Zealand. India was whitewashed 3-0 in the home Test series, and this was their first Test series defeat at home since 2012.
Over the years, Indians went on to play Test cricket; this was the first time that India lost a home series with a whitewash to any of their opposition.
Kohli and Rohit failed to be among the runs, which was one of the big reasons why India failed in the series. Fans have been calling for the retirement of the two legends from red-ball cricket ahead of the start of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 in Australia.
Dinesh Karthik’s remarks on veteran Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s Test career
Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has backed the two players in this lean phase and asked the fans to not go after them after just one series. He feels that if the two batters don’t go on to perform in the next 10 matches, then the questions about their spot in the Test team could be valid.
“What is the hurry, boss? One bad series and already calling for the heads. I don’t think so. I think if they don’t do well in the next 10 Test matches, then we will come back to this question, and then it becomes a fair question, considering it’s going to be another domestic season. For the moment, I don’t think we need to group anyone anywhere,” Dinesh Karthik said.
Rohit Sharma scored 91 runs in three Tests at an average of 15.16 in the Test series against New Zealand. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli scored 93 runs at an average of 15.50. Both of them managed to score just one half-century through the course of these three matches.
