For Bangladesh, Nazmul Hossain Shanto played a brilliant innings of 82 runs off 127 balls with the help of eight fours and three sixes, but he did not get much support from his teammates.
Bangladesh’s day got off to a good start as Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan effectively battled the Indian bowlers in the first hour of play, adding 48 runs for the fifth wicket.

Despite getting limited help from the pitch, Ashwin used his sharp cricketing wit and did not need any assistance from the pitch. Ashwin effectively used the sharp angle from around the wicket against left-handers, especially troubling Shakib.
Ashwin bowled a slightly length delivery that touched the handle of Shakib’s bat and Yashasvi Jaiswal took the catch at short leg.
Ashwin quickly tied Australian great Shane Warne with his 37th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. When Jadeja caught Mehdi Hasan Miraz (8) at long-on, he sent him back to the pavilion.
In the process, Ashwin broke the record of 36 five-wicket hauls held by New Zealand great Richard Hadlee. The seasoned all-rounder has taken five or more wickets in a Test match and hit a century on four separate occasions.
Jadeja also contributed by dismissing Shanto and Liton Das along with Ashwin. Liton Das was caught by Rohit Sharma at first slip.
Shanto’s innings certainly gave Bangladesh a ray of hope for the next innings, but as soon as he was out, Bangladesh’s hopes were over.
However, despite Shanto’s struggle, his effort alone was not enough. He tried to put pressure on the bowlers by playing aggressively, but in the 59th over, while trying to play a big shot on Jadeja’s ball, he got caught by Jasprit Bumrah at midwicket.
With the fall of this wicket, Bangladesh’s hopes were over and their innings could not go beyond the first session. After this defeat, Bangladesh will have to rethink the strategy and regroup themselves before the next Test, which will start on September 27 in Kanpur.
