IPL 2025: The last few weeks have seen many big updates ahead of the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025). The BCCI met with all ten IPL franchises on July 31, where they discussed the coming season of the league. Notably, we will see a mega auction ahead of the IPL 2025, and the hot topic of discussion is the retention.

All teams are allowed to retain only limited players. A few teams have already made changes to their coaching staff, and some teams are expected to make some changes very soon. And now some media reports confirm that Gujarat Titans and Ashish Nehra are set to part ways ahead of the IPL 2025. Ricky Ponting has already left Delhi Capitals, and now we might see Nehra joining this list.

GT made their IPL debut in 2022 and won the title. They finished as runner-up in 2023, but in 2024, they finished seventh on the table. As per a report from Cricbuzz, the franchise is likely to make changes in its coaching staff.

Vikram Solanki is the director of cricket, and Ashish Nehra and Gary Kirsten are head coach and mentor batting coach of the team. Kirsten has joined the Pakistan cricket team, so he is unlikely to be available for the next season. Solanki might retain his position, but Nehra might leave the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025.

IPL 2025: A team can retain up to 6 Players

Ahead of the IPL 2025, the biggest discussion is about the number of retentions. Some of the IPL teams requested the BCCI to disband the mega auction and host a small auction. But the Indian board is certain about it, and the coming season will have the mega auction.

It might be tough for the teams as every side has so many stars which they have to release. Hence, as reported by Cricbuzz, the BCCI may allow a franchise to retain up to six players. This means they can retain or use an RTM card for up to six players for their team. Notably, during the 2022 mega auction, the BCCI only allowed for four retentions without an RTM card.
