Rohit Sharma scored a brilliant half-century but couldn’t lead India to win. The first ODI match between India and Sri Lanka on Friday ended in an unexpected tie as India needed 1 run to win off the last 14 balls and two wickets were in the bag.

That’s where the Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka picked up two consecutive wickets to restrict India to 231 and Rohit Sharma and his men left one run short to register their 100th ODI win against the Islanders. It came down to the wire, and Sri Lanka kept things right, which resulted in one too many wickets for India.

They couldn’t chase down a below-par score. It started with the toss, and Sri Lanka batted first. They only managed 231/8 in 50 overs. They were 101/5 at one stage, but Dunith Wellalage scored an unbeaten 67 off 65 to help the host.

Chasing the target, the Indian captain Rohit Sharma smashed a six in the very first over and cleared his intent. He went on to score his 56th half-century in ODIs. With this, he also completed 15000 runs in international cricket as an opener. It was 352nd inning as opener, and he became the second-fastest overall after Sachin Tendulkar (331).

Rohit also completed 1000 fours in ODIs. Adding to that, he became the tenth overall opener with 15000+ international runs. The Indian captain also equalled Sachin’s all-time record of most 50s as Indian opener in cricket. Rohit Sharma and Sachin have 120 half-centuries as Indian openers.

But the biggest record which he broke during his knock was for most sixes as captain. Rohit already has the record for most international sixes, but now he has also registered the record for most international sixes by a captain, going past Eoin Morgan.

Morgan had 233 sixes in 180 innings, and Rohit has hit now 234 sixes in just 124 innings as captain. The Indian captain hit seven fours and three sixes in his 58-run knock. He has hit 81 sixes against Sri Lanka in international cricket, which is the second-most after Shahid Afridi (86). After the first game ended in a tie, both teams will lock horns in the second match on Sunday in Colombo.
