The Super 8 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is underway, and the top 8 teams are fighting for a place in the semi-final. Two groups are divided into four teams each. South Africa are one of three teams that have been undefeated so far in this T20 World Cup 2024. They started with four wins in their group and carried it into the Super 8. The Proteas then beat the United States by 18 runs and followed it up with a brilliant win over the defending champion.
South Africa beat England by 7 runs to get two more points on the board. They now have four points and a NRR of +0.625. England and West Indies have two points each, while the United States have been eliminated in this group. Generally, four points are enough to secure a place in the semis, but South Africa still have a lot to do.
T20 World Cup 2024: South Africa can still be eliminated from the competition
Notably, South Africa are currently on the edge of qualifying for the semis. But mathematically, they can still be eliminated from the T20 World Cup 2024. The Proteas will face West Indies in their last match on Sunday. That match will be important for both teams. If South Africa win they will directly qualify for the semis. But if they lose, then their qualification depends on the previous result.
Notably, before the WI vs SA clash, England will take on the United States. England need this win by a good margin, which looks quite possible here. If they beat the USA by a big margin, it will give them two points, and their NRR, which is already better than South Africa, will improve more. After that, it will depend on the WI vs SA game. If West Indies win, they will get two more points.
Then, with four points, West Indies will move ahead of South Africa because they also have a better NRR than the Proteas. It will leave both England and West Indies at No. 1 and 2 in the group, and South Africa will be eliminated. Firstly, England beating the USA by a big margin looks possible, and the way West Indies are playing, they can also beat South Africa. So all three teams have a chance to make it to the semis. For South Africa, they just need to make sure that they beat West Indies on Sunday in their last Super 8 game of the T20 World Cup 2024.
