T20 World Cup 2024: Afghanistan vs Uganda match no 5 Highlight & Scorecard: Fazalhaq Farooqi gave Afghanistan a perfect start by dismissing Ronak Patel (4) and Roger Mukasa (0) off consecutive deliveries.
Although he narrowly missed a hat-trick with Riazat Ali Shah surviving by a whisker, Afghanistan quickly claimed a third wicket when Mujeeb Ur Rahman dismissed Simon Ssezai for 4.
When Naveen-ul-Haq, the third bowler introduced, picked up two wickets in his first over, Uganda found themselves in dire straits at 18/5. A brief stand between Riazat Ali and Robinson Obuya offered some resistance, but Farooqi returned to deliver more blows, finishing with exceptional figures of 5/9. Skipper Rashid Khan applied the finishing touches to seal the game.
Farooqi was named Player of the Match for his electrifying performance, which recorded the fourth-best figures in a Men’s T20 World Cup.
Mammoth Opening Stand Propels Afghanistan
Brian Masaba won the toss and opted to bowl first, aiming to restrict Afghanistan to a manageable total. However, Afghanistan’s openers quickly took advantage of favorable batting conditions, where the ball came onto the bat nicely and the outfield was fast. Uganda’s lack of discipline in the field further contributed to Afghanistan’s growing total.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz initially led the charge, soon joined by Ibrahim Zadran, who hit four consecutive fours in the sixth over. By the end of the powerplay, Afghanistan was scoring at an impressive 11 runs per over.
The boundary spree continued for Gurbaz and Zadran as Uganda’s bowlers struggled. Gurbaz brought up his maiden T20 World Cup fifty in the ninth over, smashing four sixes and two fours.
By the 10th over, Afghanistan had surpassed the 100-run mark. An eventful 25-run over from Bilal Shah, featuring five no-balls and five wides, propelled Afghanistan past 150. Brian Masaba finally broke the partnership, bowling Zadran with a low delivery.
Veteran tweaker Alpesh Ramjani and Masaba managed to pick up two more wickets in the following overs, cleaning up the Afghanistan top-order.
Despite Uganda’s improved performance in the death overs, conceding only 22 runs for three wickets in the final four overs, Afghanistan had already set a formidable total.
Afghanistan’s clinical display with both bat and ball proved too much for Uganda, underscoring their dominance in the match.
