Mayank Agarwal: The T20 format, being one of the shortest formats of cricket, requires more handling of the team spirit to regulate the players on the field. Captaincy has been the toughest job in this format of the game, even though many legends did not fulfill the requirements of being a proper captain for their side.
Captaincy has been a great deal for the IPL teams, with several captains leading the franchises in the IPL. Even the fans are eager to know their captains before every edition of the IPL.
Mayank Agarwal is one of those talents who has been a part of many IPL franchises like DD and RCB, but he made his commanding arrival in the Indian Premier League by playing for the Punjab Kings. Mayank Agarwal, as a Punjab player, made his mark as a classic cricketer by featuring in the Indian test squad and later in ODI games as well. Mayank Agarwal was retained by the Kings as a surprise package following the departure of their previous skipper KL Rahul. However, Mayank could not deliver much as a captain, and this role as captain even seemed to affect his form as a batsman.
Let’s take a look at the few players who can come in as the new PBKS captain in the upcoming edition of the IPL.
2. Shikhar Dhawan
Though he is no longer a member of the Indian T20 squad, Dhawan is without a doubt the most convincing Indian T20 player who can still deliver in the shortest format of the game. Dhawan has a wealth of experience, having played for several IPL franchises over the years and being the second highest run-getter behind Virat Kohli.
Dhawan is now the Indian ODI team’s second-choice captain, thanks to his command of the game flow. Dhawan, even though he is the senior player in the squad, would be the most deserving captain to step in for Mayank Agarwal.
1. Jonny Bairstow
The Englishman has been the most captivating player since he entered the tournament. Bairstow, who had previously played for the SRH in the IPL, was acquired by the Kings in the 2022 mega-auction for 6.75 crores.
Bairstow is expected to join the IPL in the next edition for his franchise after recovering from an injury for which he was ruled out of the England World Cup squad. The aggressive Englishman can be a good option for captaincy in IPL 2023.
