World Archery Championships 2023: Aditi Swamy and Ojas Deotale crowned compound world champions; winners List: India’s daughter Aditi Gopichand Swamy and Ojas Pravin Deotale won gold medals in the women’s and men’s individual compound events respectively at the World Archery Championships 2023 in Berlin, Germany on Saturday.

India won four medals in the Berlin Archery Competition, three gold, and one bronze. Compound archers took home all of the medals. The medal tally was India’s best achievement at the World Championships. Since the inception of the championship in 1931, India had never won a gold medal.

Sixteen-year-old Aditi Gopichand Swamy, seeded sixth, became the youngest archer to win an individual event at the Senior World Championships after beating Mexico’s Andrea Becerra 149-147 in the final.

In the Under-18 category, reigning world champion and world record holder Aditi Gopichand Swamy defeated second-seed fellow Indian Jyoti Surekha Vennam 149-145 in the semi-finals to seal her place in the gold medal match.

Meanwhile, Jyoti Surekha Vennam won the bronze medal in the women’s individual compound event by defeating Turkey’s Ipek Tomaruk 150-146. Another Indian archer Preneet Kaur bowed out in the quarterfinals after losing to Jyoti Surekha Vennam.

Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Preneet Kaur and Aditi Gopichand Swamy had earlier combined to win the women’s compound team event and the first gold medal for India at the Archery World Championships. Later that day, Ojas Pravin Deotale of India won the men’s individual compound event.

Ojas Pravin Deotale beat Poland’s Lukasz Przybylski 150-149 in a hard-fought match to become the first Indian male archer to win a gold medal at the World Championships.

The 21-year-old Ojas had earlier beaten former world champions, Dutch archer Mike Schlosser and Przemyslaw Konecki of Poland, in the semi-finals and quarters respectively.

India’s campaign at the Berlin meet came to an end on Saturday. None of the Indian recurve archers made it to the medal round, failing to win any Olympic quota place for the proposed Paris 2024 Olympics in Berlin. Only recurve archery events are held in the Olympics.
