IND vs BAN: R. Ashwin took six wickets to give India a stunning 280-run win over Bangladesh: Indian veteran star all-rounder off-spin wizard Ravichandran Ashwin bowled brilliantly, taking six wickets as India defeated Bangladesh by 280 runs in the first Test. With five sessions remaining, the match was declared over, giving India a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Continuing their innings from yesterday’s score of 158/4, Bangladesh were bowled out for 234 in the second innings. Ashwin recorded impressive figures of 6/88. Ravindra Jadeja also made a significant contribution, taking three wickets to register figures of 3/58.
For Bangladesh, Nazmul Hossain Shanto played a brilliant innings of 82 runs off 127 balls with the help of eight fours and three sixes, but he did not get much support from his teammates.
Bangladesh’s day got off to a good start as Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan effectively battled the Indian bowlers in the first hour of play, adding 48 runs for the fifth wicket.
At that time, Mohammed Siraj was the best bowler for India. He bowled with good pace and precision, but occasionally, even with an edge or out wide of the fielders, he failed to get caught out.
Siraj’s frustration was evident as he repeatedly expressed his displeasure towards Shanto, but it did not affect Shanto. Shakib scored a boundary by playing a front foot pull shot off Siraj’s delivery but he was lucky when Rishabh Pant missed a stumping opportunity off Jadeja’s delivery when Shakib was on 17.

At the first drinks break, Bangladesh was 194/4 and looking to extend their innings. However, Ashwin’s return after the break turned the game in India’s favour.
Despite getting limited help from the pitch, Ashwin used his sharp cricketing wit and did not need any assistance from the pitch. Ashwin effectively used the sharp angle from around the wicket against left-handers, especially troubling Shakib.
Ashwin bowled a slightly length delivery that touched the handle of Shakib’s bat and Yashasvi Jaiswal took the catch at short leg.
Ashwin quickly tied Australian great Shane Warne with his 37th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. When Jadeja caught Mehdi Hasan Miraz (8) at long-on, he sent him back to the pavilion.
In the process, Ashwin broke the record of 36 five-wicket hauls held by New Zealand great Richard Hadlee. The seasoned all-rounder has taken five or more wickets in a Test match and hit a century on four separate occasions.
Jadeja also contributed by dismissing Shanto and Liton Das along with Ashwin. Liton Das was caught by Rohit Sharma at first slip.
Shanto’s innings certainly gave Bangladesh a ray of hope for the next innings, but as soon as he was out, Bangladesh’s hopes were over.
However, despite Shanto’s struggle, his effort alone was not enough. He tried to put pressure on the bowlers by playing aggressively, but in the 59th over, while trying to play a big shot on Jadeja’s ball, he got caught by Jasprit Bumrah at midwicket.
With the fall of this wicket, Bangladesh’s hopes were over and their innings could not go beyond the first session. After this defeat, Bangladesh will have to rethink the strategy and regroup themselves before the next Test, which will start on September 27 in Kanpur.
