Gautam Gambhir will become the new head coach. It’s been ten days since India won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados. India defeated South Africa to clinch the title. That win ended India’s ICC trophy drought. But that tournament also saw the last of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja in the T20 internationals. Meanwhile, Rahul Dravid has also officially stepped down from the position of head coach. His extended tenure of six months has ended.
But until now, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to announce the next head coach of the Indian team. Notably, India’s second-string side are currently featured in the five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe. VVS Laxman, who is the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), is with the team as interim coach. So why is it taking so much time for BCCI to announce the next head coach?
BCCI is likely to announce the appointment of Gautam Gambhir ahead of the IND vs SL series – Report
Some media reports confirmed that Gautam Gambhir is certain to become India’s next head coach. However, the announcement is getting delayed as there is some negotiation going on between the BCCI and Gautam Gambhir. As per the report from Indian Express, the delay is caused by the salary negotiation.
Notably, the coaching stints of batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip have also ended, and the BCCI has opened the application for these positions. Some media reports confirm that the Indian Board has given complete authority to Gautam Gambhir to choose the coaching staff.
Earlier, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said, “Both coach and selector appointments will be made shortly. CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names, and after reaching Mumbai whatever they have decided we will go by that. VVS Laxman is going to Zimbabwe, but a new coach will join from Sri Lanka series.”
Notably, Sri Lanka will tour India for three ODIs and three T20Is. The tour will start with the first T20I on July 27 (Saturday). The Indian board has also not confirmed the next T20I captain of the team. Meanwhile, the squad for the Sri Lanka series is likely to be announced next week, and Rohit, Virat, and Bumrah might be rested from ODIs.
