New Zealand legend and former explosive batter Brendon McCullum has extended his contract until 2027, and resuming his duties as the red-ball coach, he has been provided with the additional role of England’s white-ball coach.

The cricketer first entered the role of a red ball coach for the first time back in May 2022, as he showed the least interest in white ball cricket. However, the decision stirred a roar over the cricket world, as the batter’s extremely aggressive nature didn’t suit his role as a Test coach.

However, McCullum proved everyone wrong, as he set different standards of the game in the longer format for the English side. England have since then played with a different intent in the longest format of the game.

Even players like Joe Root, who was ever seen as a unique test talent and the best among Fab-4 in modern cricket, have evolved his test strike rate as it grew exponentially. McCullum has even identified several young players like Ben Duckett and Crawley who have emerged as test batters who strike the ball ferociously.

Brendon McCullum has been appointed as the white ball coach and will resume the role of coach from the beginning of 2025 in his twin role. He will lead England to crucial tournaments like the T20 World Cups, which will be held in 2025 and 2027, and the Cricket World Cup to be held in South Africa in 2027.

However, as of now, Marcus Trescothick, who has been appointed as the interim head coach for white-ball cricket by the ECB for the Aussie summer as well as the Caribbean tour, will hold onto his position until McCullum takes over the role.
